Our Story
Personal Responsibility Recovery was founded in early 2022 by Marc Meyers and his lifelong friend Thomas M. Brown, whose shared history spans decades and is rooted in creativity, friendship, and recovery.
Marc Meyers was raised in Houston, Texas, where he attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, majoring in photography. He and Tom Brown grew up on the same street in southwest Houston, forging a lifelong bond through a shared love of photography and the arts. The two worked together as professional photographers until Marc relocated to Austin in 1984.
Shortly after the move, addiction overtook Marc’s life. He became unemployable, homeless, and without hope until seeking treatment at Austin State Hospital in January of 1985. More than four decades later, Marc remains sober—crediting an exceptional treatment team, the 12-step recovery community, and the grace of a loving God. His personal recovery became the foundation for a lifelong commitment to service and advocacy.
As Marc rebuilt his life as an artist and entrepreneur, he witnessed firsthand the profound impact of Austin Recovery, a nonprofit treatment center that provided accessible care for those who otherwise had nowhere to turn. In 2004, Marc was invited to serve on the Board of Directors of Austin Recovery, where he gained a deeper understanding of both the critical need for substance use disorder treatment and the barriers that make such care unattainable for many.
By the early 2010s, the Austin area experienced a rapid expansion of for-profit treatment centers. Substance use treatment increasingly became driven by insurance reimbursements and high out-of-pocket costs, often at the expense of truly individualized care. Recognizing this shift, Marc and Tom began discussing the need for a different model—one that centered on the individual seeking recovery rather than financial incentives.
In late 2021, they began assembling a program and team designed to meet clients where they are and provide treatment plans tailored to each person’s needs. At the time, Tom Brown was 82 years old and shared that he could not imagine a more meaningful legacy than helping create a program capable of changing lives, just as recovery had changed Marc’s life. Tom passed away in February of 2024, knowing their shared vision would continue.
Over the next four years, Personal Responsibility Recovery refined its program, built a highly qualified team, and helped nearly 100 clients reclaim their lives. Yet a growing realization emerged: too many individuals seeking help had to be turned away simply because they could not afford treatment or lacked insurance coverage. These individuals were often referred to programs with long waitlists or limited services.
This experience deepened Marc’s understanding of the nonprofit model pioneered by Austin Recovery—one addict helping another. When Austin Recovery closed its doors during the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for accessible, mission-driven treatment became even more urgent.
Guided by this philosophy, Personal Responsibility Recovery transitioned to PRRecovery (PRR), a nonprofit treatment center committed to serving all who seek recovery. The organization has since assembled a dedicated Board of Directors composed of recovery-focused leaders committed to providing the highest quality treatment for substance use disorders and the underlying mental health conditions that often accompany addiction.
PRR now offers a single, transparent program cost comparable to the average insurance deductible, with no hidden or additional out-of-pocket expenses—making it one of the most affordable 28-day intensive residential treatment programs in Texas. Fifty percent of beds are offered at a reduced or sliding-scale rate based on a client’s ability to pay, allowing PRR to serve both insured and uninsured individuals who meet clinical criteria.
PRR’s work is made possible through private and corporate donations from individuals and organizations who understand the urgent need for effective, compassionate addiction treatment. The dedication of PRR’s Board of Directors and staff is extraordinary and without parallel.
PRTXRecovery, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Tax-deductible donations directly support accessible, life-changing treatment for individuals seeking recovery.
